Significance of Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akti or Akha Teej, is an annual Jain and Hindu spring festival. It falls on the third Tithi (lunar day) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Vaisakha. As an auspicious day, it signifies the “third day of unending prosperity”
The festival of Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated as it brings good luck and success. The word Akshaya means “never diminishing or unending”. Hence anything, especially Gold, bought on this day, brings prosperity and more wealth in the coming future. It will never diminish and continue to grow or appreciate.
Akshaya Tritiya is believed in Hinduism to be the birthday of Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Vishnu, and he is revered in Vaishnava temples. Hence, this festival is also called “Parasurama Jayanti“
On the day of Akshaya Tritiya, devotees worship Lord Vishnu who is the preserver God in the Hindu Trinity. According to Mythology, Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya day. Vedic astrologers also consider Akshaya Tritiya an auspicious day free from all malefic effects.
The Akshaya Tritiya day is considered highly auspicious for new ventures, marriages, expensive investments such as in gold or real estate property or any new beginnings.
On this day, women (married or unmarried) pray for the well-being of the men in their lives or the one they may in future get engaged to. After prayers, they distribute germinating grams (sprouts), fresh fruits and sweets.
If the Akshaya Tritiya falls on a Monday (Rohini), the festival is believed to be even more auspicious. Fasting, charity and helping others on this day is another festive practice.
